ABSTRACT
The design of the unbuilt West Loop Park project by Perkins and Will in Chicago, Illinois addresses the conflict between superhighway infrastructure and the need to create habitable space that is free of air pollution from vehicle exhaust. The issue of how to design around infrastructure that is unsuitable as an adjacent land-use is not unique to Chicago. West Loop Park takes on the form of windswept trees as a design strategy and in doing so is able to mediate the continuous airstream of the roadway.
