ABSTRACT

The relationship between an evergreen conifer, Fitzroya cupressoides, and craftsmanship in southern Chile dates back to 13,000 B.P. In the 21st century sixteen UNESCO World Heritage Churches on the Chiloé Archipelago continue the tradition of using wood from this special tree that grows only in Chile and Argentina. This essay touches on the challenge of endangered species, deforestation, and the recognition of these issues in the design disciplines.
