ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how an organism from the forest can become a biological factory for architecture. Computational architect David Benjamin and his New York practice, The Living, designed Hy-Fi as an outdoor pavilion with the intention that it would be grown and wasted. Ten thousand strong, weather-resistant, and lightweight bricks were made from fungus and corn stalks. These bricks were used to construct Hy-Fi at MoMA PS1. After three months the pavilion was disassembled and the bricks were made into compost for community gardens in Queens.
