ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors present their intervention to social role play and its developmental effects with children 3–6 years. Social role play is not an individual activity, but a collectively organized joint process. A principal feature of a play action in social role play is the form of execution, which partially corresponds to the levels of intellectual development, where forms of material, materialized, perceptual and verbal actions may be identified. Important changes were noticed in the use of functional components of social role play. In social role play, the child acquires two kinds of relations to the role and starts to differentiate the relations. On the one hand the child creates an imaginary situation in the play. On the other hand, the child starts to plan, organize and develop the whole content of play events. Social role play is an activity type, which may positively transform and enrich the social experience of young children.
