ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief overview of some of the more useful strategies. It visits the References or numerous online faculty development institutions directed toward the scholarship of teaching and learning. The learning environment is paramount for fostering critical thinking. Good critical thinking questions enhance discussion and may lead to new directions. Educators must be flexible with the process while meeting learning outcomes. If conversation is stifled in the classroom students will quickly learn to shut down and motivation can suffer. This does not mean that unfocused conversations are helpful. Careful planning helps direct the conversations toward learning outcomes. Critical thinking learning environments provide opportunities to demonstrate that some assumptions may not remain valid under further scrutiny. Students need to appreciate the discrepancies that may be exposed in conversations involving critical thinking. The environment needs to support students in their ability to change their perspectives when faced with additional evidence.
