ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on social communication development of: intersubjectivity and nonverbal communication development, speech and language development, and pragmatic language development. Poorer linguistic outcomes and limited exposure to different styles of social communication may affect social communication development and ability as well as academic achievement. The chapter examines the skill that develops during childhood, but not all aspects of pragmatic language. These include intentionality, speech acts, politeness rules and rules associated with conversational exchanges. This chapter discusses the factors that influence social communication styles and abilities. It describes the socioeconomic status (SES) and culture. The chapter talks about the communication disabilities such as language impairment, autism, attention-deficit disorders (ADD/ADDHD), and social-emotional disorders or trauma can influence one's social communication. It also analyses the factors affecting social communication competence. Social competence and socially competent communication behaviors emerge from the developmental foundations of social understanding and intersubjectivity and are affected by individual and environmental factors.
