ABSTRACT

Factor analysis has been presented as a procedure for analyzing a two-dimensional data matrix. Two- and three-mode factor analyses are special cases of multimode factor analysis that may have four, five, or more modes. Three modes factor analyses are often of concern in psychological research that includes variations not only in variables and individuals but that also in the conditions under which the observations are made. In psychology, the typical focus of a factor analysis varies and so does the appropriate technique. A factor analysis of variables is concerned with states or traits. Multimode factor analysis has received less attention than standard factor-analytic techniques and little research experience has been gained with it. Interbattery factor analysis is a procedure by which factors appearing across two sets of variables can be found when they have been collected from the same individuals by different measuring devices, on different occasions.
