ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. This book demonstrates the problem of communicating climate change in Russia is not that simple. The priority of economic development in Russia for decades moved environmental issues to the background of political discourse and made it very unlikely that Russia would purposefully commit to a reduction of its economic carbon dependency in order to save the world from climate change. On the other hand, after the split of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Russia experienced an involuntary drop in Green House Gases (GHG ) emissions. The methods used in climate change research project for data collection and analysis can be broadly divided into two categories namely media analysis and elite interviews. Discourse analysis allows us to explore the uniqueness of the text produced by media where the meaning of words alters and understands completely differently depending on the context.
