ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the social practices and technical features that are used to implement action brokering and assess their impact, highlighting key factors that contribute to successful collective action, the challenges, and policy implications of platforms that promote action brokering. It explains action brokering, its evolution, and the differences between it and other strategies for online community engagement, and focuses on intentional action brokering via an online platform, a community manager, and organizational support. Then, it also defines the new concept of action brokering and illustrates it through the social and technical aspects of the ACTion Alexandria platform to identify emerging themes related to the successes and challenges of action brokering in a technologically mediated environment. The role of action brokering is understood as a mechanism for collective action in local social issues and to identify best practices and lessons learned using such an approach, particularly during the early stages of a project's development.
