ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we’ll explore some key concepts, strategies, and recommendations for you to use in your classrooms when assessing your students’ informational writing. There are three key components of effective informational writing assessment that we’ll discuss in this chapter: 1) Assessment of informational writing should be attribute focused, with specific evaluation criteria for each attribute; 2) Assessment of informational writing should be based on the instruction students have received; and 3) Assessment of informational writing should inform future instruction. Let’s begin by exploring the first of these components, which emphasizes the attribute-focused nature of effective informational writing assessment.
