ABSTRACT

Compare Figures 9.1 and 9.2, two maps from 1960 and 1989, respectively. Thirty years ago there were only a few theatres in Sweden, almost all of them in the southern part. North of Uppsala no theatre company was to be found. Stockholm and Gothenburg, the two biggest eities, were also the dominant theatre centres. By the 1990s the situation has radically changed. Many local theatre institutions have been founded and they are no longer concentrated in the densely populated areas; they are situated all over the country. Today most of Sweden's twenty-four counties have a theatre of their own.
