ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses how and to what extent China greens its financial institutions and practices in contributing to China's goals and objectives of a sustainable economy and society. It starts with an analysis of China's financial system and how it relates to the environment. The chapter reviews the policies on green credit provisioning, greening the stock market and greening insurances, to finish with an assessment on the need for further improvements in greening China's financial institutions. It focuses on China, the largest provider of south-originating green finance and housing also the world's second largest lender for green projects (the China Development Bank). The chapter also reviews the different initiatives, policies and practices of greening China's financial system and institutions, and provides an introduction into the nature and development of China's financial system and its relation to state agencies.
