ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how to avoid errors in grammar. But students often forget that in spelling and punctuation there are details that should be correct. Spelling should be learned with every new word learners come across. Spelling is admittedly an area where there can be a lot of variation, but there are certain rules which should be followed. Compound words that are words that are made up of combinations of different types of words are a well-known feature of the German language. Capital letters are used a lot more in German than they are in English. Punctuation is as important to get the finishing touches right when it comes to punctuation when writing in a foreign language as it is when writing in learners own. For direct quotations, German uses quotation marks in much the same way as they are used in English: someone has said something and learners would like to relay it in direct speech.
