ABSTRACT

The Fukushima Daiichi disaster, which unfolded from March 11, 2011 onward, had devastating consequences for Japan and the communities in close proximity. It raised questions about the safety and future of nuclear energy worldwide. In Switzerland, the disaster gained high media coverage (Crettaz von Roten 2013; Kristiansen and Bonfadelli 2014). Many articles focused on what lessons Switzerland might learn from Fukushima. Issues for policy learning included: what are the security risks of Swiss nuclear power plants? Are seismic, social and technical risks of Swiss nuclear power plants adequately evaluated? Is it necessary to build new nuclear power plants in the future? Are the risks involved in nuclear energy socially acceptable?
