ABSTRACT

Bobby Knight becomes furious over two turnovers in a competition between Indiana University and the University of Michigan. During the Pan American Games in 1979 in Puerto Rico, Knight was involved in a physical altercation with a Puerto Rican police officer. One player on the team, Daryl Thomas, was, according to Knight, underperforming during the practice, infuriating Knight. Neil Reed, a junior who had started 72 games for Indiana University, claimed, in a televised CNN/Sports Illustrated report, that Knight grabbed his neck and choked him over a disagreement they had had in 1997. The attention Knight received is largely attributable to the length of his career as a coach, during which he enjoyed great success on the court. On November 24, 1985, Knight had what is now an infamous verbal outburst during the final week of practice before the official start of the basketball season at Indiana University.
