ABSTRACT

The litany of academic and criminal infractions raises the question whether the administration was merely engaging in suspect recruiting or recruiting suspects. The first signs of Coach Broadus's dubious recruiting decisions came in fall 2007, when two talented but troubled guards were signed to letters of intent. The first, Emanuel Mayben, was an extremely successful high school player and a top college recruit; however, due to strong concerns about his scholastic underperformance and numerous suspensions, major programs like Syracuse, rumored to be pursuing him, lost interest. The second, Malik Alvin, also played at two different institutions – Chipola College and University of Texas, El Paso – eventually leaving the latter because of academic problems. When he landed at Binghamton (BU), the whispers in the America East Conference (AEC) that arose after Mayben's signing loudened.
