ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks broad approach to the formal care of those facing loss, or into that area commonly referred to as intervention. In contrast, the Ten Questions of Loss framework encourages us to consider the person's loss from many aspects and allows us to consider various options for care that can be offered both in the short term and long term by one or more carers and those within the broader social network. The chapter considers a number of important issues associated with intervention in loss: overall principles in all intervention, the role of technique and common factors in care and evidence-based practice. Care can be offered at various levels from prevention and early intervention to short-term support such as offered in counselling and longer-term care aimed to release blockages to the grieving process or relieve distressing grief reactions.
