ABSTRACT

The School of Economics, between the wars, gave itself to plenty of cheerful nonsense with brains behind it. The next piece of nonsense to be noticed here had the justification of raising money for a good cause. As soon as the building begun by the King in 1920 had been completed, the organizers of King Edward's Hospital Fund realized the chance of publicity and a little money that the theatre of new School of Economics in the traffic heart of London gave them. Maiden became an excellent meeting place for students and for teachers-not in professional capacities but as athletes. In succeeding years, from 1927 to 1932 particularly, the School won three or four inter-collegiate cups each year, with for a time a stranglehold on the Association Football Cup, and was a formidable competitor in most sports. The mascot, a finely carved wooden beaver, was brought in covered by a sheet and placed before the Director at table.
