ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with key experiences of a dean finding a suitable space for teacher education at university level within the bureaucratic tradition of Germanic universities, using leadership as a driving force for systems change and creating a culture for next practice. She shares her personal learning experience by presenting some of the strategies which have proven effective in the given context of educational policy and practice. There are many more aspects of a dean's cultural leadership in faculty development which have not been dealt with in this chapter, such as the role of research in faculty development. Research is a strong backbone in every faculty and plays a vital part in the culture of teacher education, but is often questioned on its relevance for the practice of teaching by students. Teacher educators are confronted by a role that is experienced quite deeply and frequently as a series of dilemmas.
