ABSTRACT

Knowledge has become a fundamental component of economic and social development. The ability of a society to produce and use knowledge is critical for sustained economic growth and improved living standards (World Bank 1999). In this context, tertiary education plays an essential role in building a strong human capital base and contributing to an efficient national innovation system. Tertiary education institutions help countries build globally competitive economies by developing a skilled, productive and flexible labour force and by creating, applying and disseminating new ideas and technologies.
