ABSTRACT

The twofold impacts of massification and globalisation on higher education are pervasive and constantly evolving. Whereas the initial wave of globalisation was marked by student mobility, a new wave has facilitated the mobility of professors, degree programmes and institutions across borders (Tierney and Lanford 2015). Research universities around the world are therefore vying for global recognition by competing for scholars who can produce innovative research that is both publishable and visible (Marginson 2006), by building international alumni bases (Olds 2007), and by cultivating brands that are identifiable across nations and cultures (Kumar 2013).
