ABSTRACT

Negatives are used to contradict the meaning, or part of the meaning, of a sentence. They include various parts of speech such as adverbs or indefinites. Typical negative words are no, not and nothing. In Italian, negatives are made with single words but more often are made with two. In Italian the main single negatives are no no and non not. Their use does not always correspond to the English. Non and other negatives such as niente may be used in constructions before nouns, adjectives, prepositions, etc. The position may vary depending on the tense, the emphasis or the personal style of the speaker. Mica is colloquial and widely used in speech to reinforce non. Using negatives sometimes involves the use of a subjunctive verb.
