ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the numerals and units of measurement. There are two types of numerals: cardinal numbers, which are used for counting and ordinal numbers, used to order items in a series. All cardinal numbers are invariable except for uno. This becomes un when used before a masculine noun and una with a feminine noun. Numerals may lose their final vowel before another noun beginning with a vowel. In Italian, full stops are used with numbers where in English commas are required. In English, only ordinal numbers are used, but Italian uses both ordinal and cardinal numbers. The latter are used especially with reference to art and literature. Collective numbers can be singular or plural: in the singular they express approximation. Cardinal numbers use does not always correspond to the English.
