ABSTRACT

Associative duties are a class of moral duties that are special, rather than general. They do not apply to all people in all places. Rather they only arise when the right kind of relationship exists between the duty bearer and the claim bearer. That is, individual or institutional agents are only thought to have associative duties in unique circumstances. These duties are commonly understood to be agentrelative, meaning that the reasons which justify the duties involve reference to the specific moral agent involved, in contrast to the impartial duties which are owed to all persons irrespective of the particular circumstances or relations they inhabit.
