ABSTRACT

We live in and through time. It envelopes, mediates and permeates us. We have time and it has us. We make time and we lose it. Time is our friend and our enemy. Time is on our side and against us. We kill time, run out of it and waste it. It is a resource, an economy, a source of comfort and distress. It makes us feel anxious and bored. We have happy times and miserable ones. We divide up time into discrete segments while being caught in the indivisible flow of time. We control time and it controls us. Time wears many masks. There is daily time, historical time, transcendental time and institutional time. We juggle these temporalities. We try and make sense of them by trying to make them fit together. Often they don't align very well.
