ABSTRACT

To understand how families with a disabled child live life, this chapter explains what happens before, during and after school. First the chaper explains the awareness of disability across the UK. The term disability refers to a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities and developmental delay is when a child is less developed physically or mentally than is usual for their age. Through greater appreciation one can truly understand how disability affects learning in the classroom. The chapter explains how common disability or developmental conditions alter through a child's school life. It discusses why children need to develop disability awareness skills. The chapter addresses both the impact of disability on parents and on the extended family. It concludes with the practical tips that can be applied in the classroom.
