ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides case studies of seven exemplary low carbon communities, especially to North American cities, but also globally. It discusses the impetus around how each development came to be. The book describes the key policy and design measures incorporated into each site that help to facilitate low carbon lifestyles. Low carbon refers to communities that offer paths to significant reductions in carbon and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by limiting and discouraging car use and car ownership. The first three case studies exhibit high levels of participatory process and attempt to integrate innovative car-free or car-lite developments into the existing urban fabric. The next three case studies are examples of showcase developments primarily developed as part of a national agenda to promote environmental sustainability. All three are urban port or waterfront redevelopments near the city center.
