ABSTRACT

Vauban is a well-known car-free district in the City of Freiburg, located in the foothills of the Black Forest in eastern Germany. Vauban was highlighted extensively in Green Urbanism by Timothy Beatley in the late 1990s and was reintroduced into the urban planning literature by Andrea Broaddus and Robert Cervero in 2010. In 1992, the City of Freiburg initiated a masterplanning competition for a new mixed-use eco-suburb. The City of Freiburg initially intended to apply the same model coming out of the masterplanning competition. However, a group of local environmental campaigners formed an association called Forum Vauban, with the objective of introducing more extreme measures into the masterplan. The Regio-Verkehrsverbund Freiburg (RVF) agency coordinates transit service in the region. The City of Freiburg also offers a combined transit and carsharing pass called the RegioMobilCard, which offers discounts on a range of mobility services.
