ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we’d like to provide the theoretical basis for the rest of the book. We’ll

start with a brief account of our theoretical stance, followed by an overview of the

fi eld of advising and some defi nitions. As refl ection is an important part of the advising

process, we will discuss what refl ection is and why it is so important in more detail. We

will then look at some of the fi elds and practices that have infl uenced our work, and

fi nally present a model and learning trajectory that takes into account the theoretical

perspectives.
