ABSTRACT

European anti-Semitism and the rise of Zionism, the emergence of Arab nationalism and the quest for Arab independence, the Ottoman defeat in the First World War, the British mandate in Palestine, and the Second World War and the Holocaust. The colonial territories of Germany and the Ottoman Empire that were entrusted to Britain, France, Japan, Australia and South Africa under the supervision of a League of Nations Commission. Modern Zionism, the belief that the Jews are one people and should have a state of their own dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century. The growth and development of Zionism was paralleled by that of Arab nationalism and it was over the territory of Palestine that these two national movements competed and ultimately came into direct conflict. The Arab Revolt had also achieved its desired result: a complete reversal of British policy, a clear step back from the Zionist state-building project while simultaneously supporting Arab independence.
