ABSTRACT
It was beautiful sunny afternoon in Dubrovnik, Croatia, in July 2009. 1 Robert H. Benmosche, the former chairman of MetLife – a global provider of insurance, annuities, and employee benefits – was enjoying a well-deserved retirement on the tranquil shores of the Adriatic Sea. If he turned his eyes away from the ocean to look over his shoulder, he could see his well-tended vineyards beckoning behind him. Life was good.
