On December 26, 2004, a devastating earthquake and subsequent huge tsunami struck Indonesia’s western-most point in the Province of Aceh. The total death toll from both disasters was estimated to be about 180,000 people. This represented 4 percent of the population in the Province of Aceh. In some of the coastal districts of Aceh, up to 35 percent of the population was lost. Beyond the loss of life, half a million people lost their homes and livelihoods, thousands of kilometers of roads were destroyed, thousands of hectares of rice and other agricultural elds were ruined, and even critical public records needed to afrm land and other property rights were lost.
