ABSTRACT

As I was completing this book in November 2015, a spate of terrorist bombings shook Baghdad, Beirut, and Paris. The bombings were one more reminder of the need for millions of leadership acts to create a more just and peaceful planet. They also were a reminder that some people-Jean Lipman-Blumen would call them toxic leaders and James MacGregor Burns would call them demagogues-fulfill human desires to follow seemingly heroic figures who promise a better world, but only after apostates and undesirables are purged. People like me, who are in the business of educating leaders and global citizens, have our work cut out for us if we are to foster beneficial leadership by all kinds of people at many levels and if we are to counter the attraction of toxic leaders and demagogues.
