ABSTRACT

The integration of multiple factors within the context of a trusting relationship has been shown to reliably facilitate the process of deep and lasting change. The cathartic release of emotion may provide temporary relief, but is rarely associated with long-term change. Instead, enduring change often requires a process of working through that involves consolidation of the emotional insights achieved in the process of uncovering. Once the previously unconscious, implicit emotional conflicts from the past are activated and in conscious awareness, patient and therapist are in a position to reevaluate them from an adult perspective. The corrective emotional experience inherent in this process is of crucial importance. In other words, this is not simply a means of gaining intellectual insight, but of facing the emotional truths that emerge spontaneously as a consequence of the process of de-repression. Suddenly, confusing problems and symptoms make sense. This chapter demonstrates the sudden clarity and coherence each of the cases.
