ABSTRACT
CHAPTER OVERVIEW This chapter will outline the role of the practitioner in establishing and sustaining
purposeful learning environments. We argue that it is the ultimate responsibility of
the setting’s practice leader to ensure that environments reflect high-quality
provision. We give some examples of creative partnerships, to illustrate the
potential of this approach to promote learning. In such environments the child’s
sense of creativity and natural curiosity is fostered and every child’s ideas and
contributions are valued. Environments need to be developmentally appropriate
to the needs of every child and, where necessary, resources can be adapted to
reflect diversity and promote inclusive practice. The chapter will address the
following questions:
How can the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’ support the establishment of warm, supportive and purposeful environments that promote play and
learning?
