ABSTRACT
There are a few operating systems that dominate the mobile and handheld market. Apple devices use iOS, first introduced in 2007 when it set the standard for tablet computers. Google's Android is now well established, although Chromebooks use the Chrome operating system. Despite being a late entry into the tablet arena, devices running Windows 8 as an operating system will no doubt prove attractive. BlackBerry uses its own operating system on some devices, and more recently Android on others. One of the more radical interventions in the mobile technology market has been the Google Chromebook. This is essentially a netbook but stripped down to very little hardware as almost everything is sitting online in the cloud and accessible through a browser. As the implementation begins, a benchmark should be made, perhaps a pretest of pupil capabilities, a sample of work or a snapshot of monitoring data.
