ABSTRACT

Oakdale is a three-form entry school with around 350 students covering the 7-11 junior age range and they share 30 of the consoles. This deputy head and ICT coordinator at Oakdale Junior School in Redbridge, east London, was an early convert to the educational qualities of mobile technology in general and to the Nintendo DS Lite games console in particular. For her and the pupils, the revolution is not the technology, it is the changing role of the teacher to make the most of the technology and establish mobile learning as a teaching method in its own right. Mobile technology has helped to create an environment of engagement and encouragement at Oakdale. Although the project as a whole, and especially Brain Training for maths, has been a big success story for Oakdale, both for mental maths and algebra, Dawn Hallybone agrees there is a time and place for technology.
