ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the basic arguments and the central aspects of the biosociality thesis. Paul Rabinow's essay "Artificiality and Enlightenment: From Socio-Biology to Biosociality" is one of the most influential contributions in science and technology studies to have been published in the past 20 years. Rabinow's notion of biosociality does not only refer to the idea of a new relation between nature and culture. The parent's group formed the core of an activist group known as Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association (DEBRA). Pseudodoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) International and the University of Hawaii have agreed to file their application for the PXE gene as co-inventors. In the late 1970s, a group of parents brought their children into the Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill to demonstrate to members of Congress the consequences of the disease and the suffering of their children.
