ABSTRACT

The author creates a Visitors-Residents map to illustrate Nicholas' digital and networked participation. 'Nicholas' is a composite character that the author created to illustrate the activities and characteristics of 'visitor' behaviour on social media. Nicholas could be a mid-career faculty member in a North American or European institution holding a research-intensive or teaching-intensive position in any number of disciplines. Nicholas' use of social media in his personal and professional life can be described as goal-oriented, and compartmentalized. Further he believes that such innocuous terms as digital identity management are ways to make branding more palatable to greater numbers of scholars who may resist such self-promotion. Nicholas tends to use a variety of social software, the most prominent of which are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype, Google Plus, Google Scholar, and his institutional email.
