ABSTRACT

Archetypes are a space for the imagination. They open out to the world. The use of archetypes by theatre practitioners can lift the work out of psychology and debate and thrust it into active images and understandings. Because archetypes are universal and easily understood, they enable actors of any level to quickly fi nd their way through scripts that may seem impenetrable. While many theorists have attempted to list or describe these structures or forms, it must be understood that there can be no fi nite list of ways of responding to the world. In this chapter, I am including some lists, but they are alterable and fi nite, unlike the gods and heroes they represent.
