ABSTRACT

Our negotiations with the Ministry of Health through the Liaison Committee of the Institute, the Clinic and the Board were crowned with success. In the 1960 five-year budget of the Ministry for capital expenditure a new building for the Tavistock was sanctioned and put into execution. Before that time the Institute had asked a firm of architects to prepare contingency plans and a model for a new Tavistock building. But the Regional Board officers could be forgiven if they felt annoyed. Not long after this we had a visit from the then Minister of Health, Mr. Enoch Powell, who spent a whole morning with us and went into our work and over our cramped premises very thoroughly. He had certainly perceived that we were a highly integrated group with a purpose and strong ethical conviction about the role of psychological medicine and social psychology in the public weal.
