Origin in the Tavistock Clinic The history of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations begins with that of the Tavistock Clinic, as Henry Dicks has shown. There were always certain characteristics deeply rooted in the Clinic which made the birth of the Institute almost inevitable. Studies of the incidence and frequency of psychological illness had made clear that its treatment was timeconsuming, difficult and uncertain once the illness had been fully established.
