ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses specifically on issues of inclusion, sport for-all and the participation of athletes with disabilities within the Paralympic Movement. It also examines the elite, recreational and inclusive sport for development dimensions of the Paralympic Movement. The Paralympic Movement does much to promote sport and physical activity for people with disabilities around the world. The Paralympic Games showcase elite talent. Sports were added to both the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games programmes and the number of National Paralympic Committees sending delegations from their countries increased. Blaze Sports sponsors a number of activities, including programmes in adapted water sports, canoe/kayak, climbing, swimming, athletics and wheelchair basketball. For people with disabilities, the cost of this equipment can be prohibitive, especially for people in developing countries. Success in competition may require costly state-of-the-art sports equipment. Sports equipment technology is advancing as well. Effective sport-for-development programs combine sport and play with other non-sport outcomes to achieve the desired development objectives.
