ABSTRACT

Feminist work calling attention to male violence against women has helped create a climate where issues of physical abuse by loved ones can be freely addressed, especially sexual abuse within families. Critically thinking about issues of physical abuse has led to question the way we as feminist advocates focus on the issue of violence and physical abuse by loved ones. This chapter focuses on extreme violence, with little effort to link these cases with everyday acceptance within intimate relationships of physical abuse that is not extreme, that may not be repeated. Feminists calling attention to reality of violence in intimate relationships has not in and of itself compelled most people to take the issue seriously, and such violence seems to be daily on increase. It serves as a catalyst for further thought, that it strengthens the efforts as feminist activists to create a world where domination and coercive abuse are never aspects of intimate relationships.
