ABSTRACT
The best contractors have proven expertise in related areas and the types of construction involved in the project. The best contractors will be able to explain and demonstrate how the site is organised and the thinking. They will be able to describe compliance with programme for the different construction work-fronts and how they have handled unforeseen complications. One important consideration is the time it takes for construction workers to reach their place of work and finding that they have the right materials and equipment when they get there. The construction workforce and their unions are inclined to see benefit in ensuring that the project site conditions encourage safety and facilitate output for workers being paid on the basis of work achieved. The real progress in the construction industry comes from the development of new materials and new products. The big challenge is to translate a good academic concept through the process of commercialisation into a product with a real market.
