ABSTRACT

Education and religion have the primary function of the socialization of individuals to their social environments. Education and religion may influence our values, beliefs, inter and intrapersonal relationships, dietary rules, social cohesion, and marital preferences. It should be noted that the topic of religious diversity at institutions of higher education may be seemingly innocuous but it is both highly controversial and political. The institutions of education and religion are powerful forces in American society. Conversion of Native Americans to Christianity was also seen as carrying out the purpose of education. One of the potential barriers to the spiritual growth of students of all faith backgrounds is Christian privilege. Religious minorities make up the fabric of America and are important to the American educational and cultural landscape. Education has many distinct characteristics in the United States: conservatism; mass education; local control; competition; the sifting and sorting function of schools; and the preoccupation with order and control.
