ABSTRACT

There is a huge and teasing paradox at the centre of acting. The whole art form is based on artifice and deception and yet the actors tell those 'lies' in order to unlock some fundamental human truths. Their mission is fun – but serious. This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book looks at how the actors can build characters and devise their own work. The whole art form is based on artifice and deception and yet they tell those 'lies' in order to unlock some fundamental human truths. The world throws a lot of stuff at us. To hang on to some sense of control of the actors' lives, they struggle to suppress the unexpected. As Tadashi Suzuki alerts the actors, part of the problem is their ongoing (and often subconscious) fight to try and subjugate nature – their own human nature and Mother Nature.
