ABSTRACT
This chapter will examine the structure and demographic characteristics of Australia’s population and identify some of the most pressing challenges presented by population growth and change. Specifically, the chapter reviews geographical patterns of population growth and decline and the age and ethnic structure of the population and the projected changes in these. In doing so the chapter provides also a critical background for understanding the complexities of urban and regional planning as discussed throughout this book.
