ABSTRACT

Hair is sold by weight and length. The longer the hair, the more it costs per ounce, regardless of quality. Even inexpensive synthetic weft sold for glue-in extensions is usually sold in 4-ounce packages. There are many types of "hair" available to make wigs. Sometimes the hair is available that looks, feels, and behaves exactly the way it needs to. Other times the hair needs work to look, move, and hold the style over a long run. The genetic background of the human hair influences the strength, curl, and diameter of the individual hairs. It also influences the number of hairs that grow on the healthy head. Hair from Southeast Asia is usually strong and thicker than European or African hair. It also resists curling if left unprocessed. Much of the human hair sold for wigs is Asian hair that has had the cuticle completely removed by an aggressive bleaching process.
