ABSTRACT

There is a paucity of research regarding law enforcement officers in the military as well as on military veterans who work in a civilian law enforcement capacity. The majority of the literature focuses on general military service members, their stressors, and interventions. Further, there is an abundance of research on civilian law enforcement officers. However, a purview of the research of civilian officers combined with military service reveals very little about the military law enforcement officer (MLEO). Therefore, this chapter will provide an introduction to the roles and responsibilities of the military police officer and continue with a discussion of special issues related to their work. Further, special attention will be made toward military veterans who are also law enforcement officers in municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies or seeking employment as a police officer for the first time.
